Description
A Sean Penn Inscribed 'Vans' Sneaker from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Universal, 1982. The slip-on style, made of white canvas with the "classic" black and white checkerboard pattern, top of the shoe inscribed in red paint by Penn reads "Fast Times / '81 / Thank You Don - Sean," "Don" being Don Phillips, the casting director of the film; Penn [as "Jeff Spicoli"] used the right shoe (which was the match to this left shoe) in the now-famous scene when he's talking on the phone to Eric Stoltz [as "Stoner Bud"]: after smoking pot, he takes the shoe out of its box and bangs it against his head while uttering the immortal line, "That was my skull! I'm so wasted!" (Please note the shoe was shellacked to preserve its paint so it's now somewhat yellowed.)Men's Size 10
PROVENANCE:
Don Phillips himself donated this 'Vans' shoe to his church [Shepherd of the Hills in Porter Ranch, CA] to sell as a fund-raiser and according to him, Sean Penn gave the other shoe to screenwriter Cameron Crowe. Interestingly, in the DVD commentary track of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Crowe specifically mentions these 'Vans' by recollecting that after Penn had finished the movie, "he lacquered a couple pairs of Vans that said, 'Thank you, Sean' (on them)." Included is a handwritten letter from Don Phillips, outlining how he obtained this shoe from Penn.
