Description
Sam Cooke 1961 Rockland Palace, New York City Concert Handbill. An original paper concert flyer advertising the great Sam Cooke and an assortment of hit-making opening acts appearing at New York City's Rockland Palace on Saturday night, September 9, 1961."This Is the Big One!" the handbill proclaims at the top. "Kick-Off Dawn Dance of the Season." The Rockland Palace would host "Breakfast Dances" like this which went all night and must have been terrific fun, especially when topped off by bacon & eggs as the next day broke.
Sam's latest Top 20 hit on both the R&B and Pop charts had been "Cupid," so it's given between his names. His next single would be the #1 R&B smash "Twistin' the Night Away."
Also on the bill were Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson, The Olympics, the Jive Five, Little Anthony of the Imperials and others. Most of them are pictured, even using that funny little 'floating head' off to the left.
Measures 8 1/2" x 11" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition, with benign half-inch creases to the top two corners which don't touch the blue. Otherwise, just a tad of surface handling and light overall toning. COA from Heritage Auctions.
