Description
Neil Diamond 1970 San Diego, CA Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising the fast-rising Neil Diamond performing at the San Diego Community Concourse on Saturday evening, June 6, 1970. The opening band was Smith from Los Angeles.Diamond had enjoyed a good number of hit singles up to this point, from "Solitary Man" in 1966 to "Sweet Caroline" in '69. (Followed by "Holly Holy.") But he had not had a Top 20 album yet. That would change later this year when Neil Diamond/Gold became his first Top 10 album, let alone Top 20. Then it all blew up for Neil in 1972 with Moods and Hot August Night.
Smith had hit the Top 5 of Billboard's Hot 100 the year before with a cover of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You," but never made another splash and faded away into obscurity.
The poster follows a template very familiar to Los Angeles and Northern California patrons who would see a lot of concert posters of this design 50 years ago, distinguished by the arch at the top which cut back on the amount of room to dispense info, but gave them a unique look. Concert Associates was probably the main driver behind these.
Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition with toning throughout, creasing in various spots, bumped corners, and edge wear. COA from Heritage Auctions.
