Description
ICONIC DESIGNER JACKET WORN BY JAGGER INCLUDING ON TOP OF THE POPS
The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger Owned and Worn Jacket (ca.
1967). Vintage original designer jacket by "Hung On You" with
recurring dragons, pagodas, and other oriental motifs to the
exterior. Constructed from satin with buttons to the front, and
maker's label to the interior lining reading "Hung On You a
Londres". Identifiable by the placement distinctive motif pattern,
Jagger can be seen wearing the jacket in 1967, including in
official band photo session images, at a club with Marianne
Faithfull, and published on the front cover of an August 1967 issue
of Japanese Music Life magazine. The jacket also features on
a 1967 appearance by the Rolling Stones on the flagship UK show
Top of the Pops, where Mick and the band performed "Let's
Spend the Night Together", footage of which can be found online.
When first auctioned in London in 2005, inside a pocket of this
jacket was an aide-memoire handwritten by Jagger on a Warsaw
hotel envelope (which was offered as a separate lot), suggesting
this jacket was also brought by Mick on the Stones' Spring 1967
tour of Europe. The Stones performed in Warsaw on April 13, 1967,
while Poland was under Communist control - the only rock band to
play in the city during this period. The shows were marred by
rioting in the streets in protest of unfair ticket allocation to
Communist party officials. "Hung On You" boutique was founded by
designer Michael Rainey, and was located on Cale Street and later
King's Road in London. The store's vibrant and colorful designs
were worn by members of the Stones, the Beatles, and the Kinks over
the course of the 1960s. Provenance: Bonhams London, April
27, 2005, Lot 347. Exhibited: Rolling Stones: 50 Years of
Satisfaction, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum, 2013.
Literature: Norman, P., The Life and Good Times of The
Rolling Stones, 1989, pp. 60-61 (illustrated). Exhibits
light wear consistent with age, some of the blue coloring faded.
