STAGE-WORN BY KEITH RICHARDS FOR THE STONES' CONTROVERSIAL TV PERFORMANCE VIEWED BY MILLIONS

Keith Richards Owned and Stage-Worn Jacket (1967). Vintage original buttoned designer jacket by "Hung On You", worn by Keith Richards including on-stage at the London Palladium for the televised entertainment show "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" on January 22, 1967, and the backstage photoshoot of the Rolling Stones promoting their latest single "Let's Spend the Night Together". The single-breasted jacket constructed from silk or satin with lavish oriental motifs printed overall, black button fastening to the front, pockets to each breast and each side, with wide collar, the inside patterned lining with maker's label reading "HUNG ON YOU a Londres". In an unexpected move to promote the single "Let's Spend the Night Together", the Rolling Stones appeared on the light entertainment TV show "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" hosted by Dave Allen. The family show was capable of TV viewing figures in excess of 10 million, and had previously promoted the Beatles in 1963 and 1964. In addition to their new single, the Stones also performed "Ruby Tuesday" and "Connection", but controversially refused to appear on the finale roundabout at the end of the show, where the night's acts would all appear together. According to Bill Wyman in his 2003 autobiography, they were expected to "grin inanely and wave as the stage revolved slowly", which the Stones refused to do. The avalanche of complaints following the show was a sign of "the older half of the nation" feeling insulted at the snub, while the Stones' young fans "couldn't care less." Provenance: Bonhams London, December 15, 2016, Lot 61; Acquired from this auction by the current owner. The previous owner's parents - "Jumpin'" Jack Dyer and Doris Dyer - worked at Keith Richards' country house Redlands as gardener and housekeeper, and this jacket was gifted to them by Richards. This lot is accompanied by a letter from the previous owner outlining the provenance, and a photograph of Jack Dyer, Mick and Keith. Literature: BRAVO music magazine, July 1967 (illustrated); Andy Babiuk & Greg Provost, Rolling Stones Gear: All the Stones' Instruments from Stage to Studio, 2014, p. 247 (illustrated). The jacket exhibits light wear consistent with age and use, the front right chest pocket lacking button. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
