Description
Bob Dylan 1963 Newport Folk Festival Concert Program. An original, robust 40-page concert program for the famed Newport Folk Festival in 1963, featuring a very young but fast-rising Bob Dylan in several performances. One biography observed that Dylan "arrived at Newport '63 an underground sensation and left the weekend a national star."The fun purple-and-green cover was painted by folkie artist Eric Von Schmidt, who also designed the well-known Dylan/Baez spring 1965 concert poster. Inside there's a long, touching piece written to his Minnesota friend Dave Glover, a Columbia Records full-page ad showing his first two albums, and a small photograph & bio that was still perpetuating the myth that Dylan hailed from Gallup, New Mexico among other places.
Other talents found in the program include Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, John Lee Hooker, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Dave Van Ronk, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Ian & Sylvia, John Hammond Jr., Ramblin' Jack Elliott, the New Lost City Ramblers, Mississippi John Hurt, Maybelle Carter and Tom Paxton, among many others.
Measures 8 ½" x 11" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. With programs, it's often the same old story... the front & back covers are a little roughed up for merely existing for over 60 years... whereas all of the inside pages are crispy mint. Such is the case here. The front cover has a couple indentations and light scuffs, all in the purple hat; the back cover has grime & dirt and a diagonal crease in the lower right corner. But almost zero of this damage appears on the inside pages.
