Description
The Black Stallion / The Black Stallion Returns (Zoetrope, 1979 / 1983) Pair of Fred Roos' Custom-Bound Combined Scripts with Press Materials, and BTS Photos. As Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios entered the 1980s, the studio's financial outlook was buoyed by an unexpected success: an adaptation of Walter Farley's beloved The Black Stallion novels. The story of young Alec Ramsay, played by Kelly Reno, and his extraordinary bond with a wild Arabian stallion named "Black" became a critical and commercial hit, anchoring Zoetrope's early slate of productions. Fred Roos, one of Coppola's most trusted collaborators, served as Producer on both The Black Stallion (1979) and its 1983 sequel The Black Stallion Returns. Offered here is an extraordinary pair of Roos' custom-bound production scripts, measuring 9" x 11" x 1.5", compiling materials related to both films, including tipped-in behind-the-scenes photographs, press clippings, and promotional materials. The first volume, bound in black covers, contains materials for The Black Stallion, while the second, bound in red covers, is devoted to The Black Stallion Returns. Included are a first-draft shooting script of The Black Stallion, dated July 11, 1977, produced by FR Productions. The script spans 68-pages (as paginated), with rainbow revised pages, and is co-written by Melissa Mathison, who would later achieve fame as the screenwriter of E.T. The features a memorable performance by Mickey Rooney, marking a celebrated return to form for the Hollywood veteran. Also included is a third-draft script of The Black Stallion Returns, dated August 6, 1981, consisting of 99 pages as paginated. The archive contains multiple 3" x 4" and 3" x 6" transparencies depicting Alec with "Black," both in candid production moments and promotional imagery. The archive reflects the broad cultural impact and acclaim these films received, while also showcasing Roos' ongoing involvement with the franchise, which extended into later projects such as The Young Black Stallion and The Adventures of the Black Stallion television series. Additional materials include press releases, clippings, and publicity materials highlighting the films' reception and Zoetrope's marketing efforts, along with tipped-in behind-the-scenes photos featuring cast and crew on set. A rare and insightful archive from one of Zoetrope's most successful family film franchises, personally assembled by one of its key creative producers. Items exhibit wear, age, creasing and bumped corners. The poster is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
