Description
Apocalypse Now (Zoetrope, 1979), Pair of Production Photos (ca. 1979). Original pair of production photographs from Apocalypse Now, capturing two rare moments from one of the most ambitious and chaotic film shoots in Hollywood history. Included are (1) gelatin silver matte borderless double-weight 14" x 11" photo featuring the cast and crew assembled in front of the Kurtz compound, with Dennis Hopper, Marlon Brando, Francis Ford Coppola, Eleanor Coppola, and others, and (1) semi-gloss color 10" x 10" photo on resin-coated paper, housed in a museum-style quick-release frame with beveled mat, showing Francis Ford Coppola and an unidentified editor reviewing footage on monitors, mid-edit. The Kurtz compound, designed by Dean Tavoularis, was built from 300-pound adobe blocks, lifted into place by levers and cranes with the help of nearly 600 local workers. The structure was later damaged by a typhoon during the notoriously fraught production, which saw Coppola on the brink of financial and emotional collapse, and Brando arriving unprepared, threatening to walk off the film despite having already received a $1 million advance. Despite its near-derailment, Apocalypse Now emerged as one of the greatest American films of all time. Its unforgettable imagery, surreal tone, and iconic lines like "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" helped the nation grapple with the lingering trauma of the Vietnam War. These two photographs, one communal, one contemplative, offer a rare glimpse into the making of a modern epic. Items exhibit age and display wear. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
