Description

River of No Return (TCF, 1954), Marilyn Monroe Original 35mm Color Transparencies (13) by Sterling Smith. Vintage original 35mm color transparencies (thirteen) on Kodachrome film in original mount of Marilyn Monroe with Robert Mitchum in River of No Return (dir. Otto Preminger) by Sterling Smith, with KODACHROME / TRANSPARENCY and MADE IN U.S.A., and exposure number stamped on the mount. With highlighted emulsion, indicating that these are likely 1st-generation images derived from the camera transparencies. River of No Return marked a stylistic departure for Monroe, pairing her with Robert Mitchum in a frontier survival narrative. Shot partly in Jasper and Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, the film's visuals-lush landscapes, riverscapes, and frontier towns-were integral to its tone. During filming, she suffered an ankle injury while losing her footing on slippery rocks while crossing a river, requiring a cast and the use of crutches. The subsequent delays in filming created tension between her and director Preminger, well known for his severe on-set demeanor. Monroe is also shown with a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, Corporal Ray Morris, from whom she received a canoe lesson on the Bow River in Alberta. These transparencies, created not for the public but as part of internal studio publicity and press assets, offer a vivid behind-the-scenes record of Monroe's physicality, costuming, and rapport with Mitchum during the production. Very Fine/Excellent. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
