Description

Led Zeppelin 1970 Stockholm, Sweden Second-Album Tour Large Concert Poster. An original, commandingly large paper concert poster for Led Zeppelin appearing at the Konserthuset ("concert house") in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday night, February 26, 1970 at 7:00 PM. This is a magnificent beast of a poster, just huge in size (but not too big to frame) and so in-your-face with the four band members almost on top of you, and their group name in huge letters above Jimmy Page's head. Forget about blimps this early in their career... we're gonna show you the band. And then all the concert information printed in silver above that... it's a simple and yet highly compelling design.

This was found in a very small stash - between 5 and 10 - of total genuine originals a long time ago, and has been in one of the world's best Led Zeppelin collections for decades, stored safely in a tube away from the light. It was actually a postponed concert date, and upon close inspection by tilting the poster in the light, you can detect the previous intended show's lettering underneath the silkscreened silver print on this one. (The original scheduling had been for October 1969.)

With such a charismatic appearance, this poster was soon repro'ed and bootlegged to death, but this is the rare absolute Real McCoy. It also makes for a great "sister piece" to the large Jimi Hendrix Experience Stockholm poster we're also auctioning in this sale. This first-time Heritage offering measures 27 1/2" x 39 3/8" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This show was part of a short 11-date European tour following Robert Plant's recovery from a car accident in Britain. Needless to say, by this point Zep was a world-class concert machine, and readers of LedZeppelin.com gave this show a 4.8 out of 5 stars. The setlist consisted of "We're Gonna Groove," "I Can't Quit You," "Dazed and Confused," "Heartbreaker," "White Summer/Black Mountainside," "Since I've Been Loving You," Jones' organ solo/"Thank You," "Moby Dick" with its attendant Bonham drum solo, and an extended "How Many More Times" that included snippets of "The Hunter," "Boogie Chillin'," "Move on Down the Line," "Fixin' to Die," "The Lemon Song" and "Be-Bop-a-Lula." The show closed with "Whole Lotta Love" and "Communication Breakdown."

This poster has not been graded because it's not part of a series that CGC currently certifies (and besides that, it's also too large). As a general guideline, CGC grades concert posters from series that have been meticulously cataloged in Eric King's Collector's Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters, which includes: Bill Graham, Family Dog, Grande Ballroom, Neon Rose and Vulcan Gas Company. In addition to these, CGC also grades posters featured in the Art of Rock book, as well as the modern series Bill Graham Presents (1985-present), New Fillmore (1988-present) and MoonAlice (2007-present). There are many other great psychedelic concert posters outside of these series and which are not pictured in Art of Rock, in part because the authors had to be highly selective with limited space. It's unknown if and when CGC will expand its grading and authenticating beyond those parameters.

Condition details: This large poster has solid bones, with the only issues being around the edges, where there are areas of fraying to be found. The left edge has the majority of them, with lots of little points of damage from top to bottom. On the left edge over from John Paul Jones' nose, there are two tears, 1" and ½", which have been mended on the verso with clear cello tape. Down from that, there's a ½" tear close to the bottom, and more edge damage below that. About 60% down, to the left of Bonham's nose, there's an edge nick with pushed in & folded material, but none missing.

In the lower right corner there's a diagonal crease which breaks the black color a bit. The entire right edge has some nudging but it's miniscule compared to the left edge. But there is a ½" edge tear directly over from "SET." The top edge has a ¼" tear above "H." The verso has some black-ink smudges at the top, but that isn't considered damage, just a printer's flaw.
