Description
James Brown 1965 San Jose, CA "Mr. Dynamite" Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising Soul Brother #1, James Brown and his Famous Flames, in concert at the Fair Grounds in San Jose, California on Friday night, January 8, 1965. Made by Tilghman ("till-man") Press out of Oakland also in the Bay Area, this poster is highlighted by a full-body shot of James in an all-white tuxedo, arms outstretched. Anna King, Bobby Byrd and Johnny & Bill round out the talent. The provenance for this poster is golden, in that it originally came from the collection of John Goddard of Village Music in Mill Valley, California. Goddard is sometimes referred to as the Godfather of boxing-style concert poster collecting, as many of his posters appeared in The Art of Rock and his record store proudly displayed many of them on its walls, to customers like Jerry Garcia and Elvis Costello, before closing many years ago.
This was at the start of a magical year for Brown; in 1965 he logged two of his biggest pop hits ever, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feed Good)," songs that future generations are fully familiar with. In a year's time, he would also weigh in with "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Measures 15 1/4" x 23 7/8" and grades to restored Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Board has been handsomely fixed up by Chameleon Restoration, with barely anything detectable on the front except for the right-center portion of Anna King's photo. The venue box and lower-right corner area had some resto work, most of which is visible only on the verso. The two lower corners have very slight creases and the oversized board is solid and rigid, in strong shape. Some of the red color has also faded back a bit with time.
