Description

Jefferson Airplane, Great Society 1965 Fillmore Aud. Mime Troupe Appeal II Handbill (AOR-2.36). Offered here is a very seminal piece of San Francisco rock history. This Mime Troupe Appeal flyer used five bands to lure donors in, including the Jefferson Airplane in their infancy and The Great Society featuring a young Grace Slick.

This event took place at the Fillmore Auditorium a couple of months before Bill Graham moved in with his dance-concert series in February '66. The date was Friday night, December 10, 1965.

The handbill is largely political in nature and tied to local permitting and such, but the fact that it's the Airplane (and Grace) at the Fillmore months before the BG-1 poster is highly enticing. This rare piece measures 7" x 9 3/8" and grades to Fair condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock - Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.114 (illus.).

More Information: Flyer has a number of little "breakthrough holes" in the first sentence of the last paragraph, along a crease. The biggest one takes out "some" in "some high spirits." On both ends of that flyer-wide horizontal crease, the paper splits with small amounts of loss. There's more of the same under "Streets" at the bottom. The handbill has a total of about five diagonal creases at different angles, including one at the top which goes under "DANCE" and "with" that carries blue residue with it. Lots of surface creasing and minor edge chipping, especially along the bottom. General toning throughout.
