Description

Jimi Hendrix Experience 1969 Wichita, KS College Campus Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising the Jimi Hendrix Experience performing at Wichita State University on Friday, June 27, 1969. This poster might have represented the final appearance ever of the original Experience - Jimi, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. The show was canceled, however, because Denver concert promoter Barry Fey offered the Experience a ton more money to play the Denver Pop Festival at Mile High Stadium that same weekend. And that show, in Denver on the Sunday, June 29, was indeed the final gig ever by the original Experience trio. Poster measures 14 x 22" and grades to lovely Mint condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: So this poster essentially caught Jimi between big rock festivals, which were all the rage in 1969. He had played the Newport Pop Festival in Los Angeles on June 20, and then Denver Pop on June 29 and that was it for the trio. Hendrix subsequently formed his Gypsy Sons and Rainbows band with five backing musicians (including Mitch), and debuted that outfit at a little gathering called Woodstock in mid-August.

One thing that makes this poster so compelling is that it displays two photos of Jimi, not just one: the posed studio picture of the whole band, and then an action shot of Jimi ripping away on his white Fender Stratocaster, a real rarity for a concert poster. Splendid!
