Description
Frank Zappa/Mothers, Alice Cooper 1969 Seattle, WA Psychedelic Concert Poster. An original concert-advertising psychedelic poster for The Mothers of Invention featuring Frank Zappa (pictured in the middle in perhaps a yearbook photo) playing at the Seattle Center Arena on Saturday, April 19, 1969. The opening acts were Canada's The Guess Who and up & coming new artist Alice Cooper. What a triple bill! This talent line-up was decidedly eclectic, with Zappa being the avant-garde, weird risk-taker, Alice Cooper on the cusp of his shock-rock career and the Guess Who emerging as a singles-oriented Top 40 act with their first hit, "These Eyes," having just entered Billboard's charts two weeks ago. Such was the case with many rock tours in the 1960's. Measures 17" x 22 3/4" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Poster artist John Moehring is the real star here, with a creation that simply dazzles with its richness, the huge number of colors used and its Aquarian psychedelic artwork. It's a true stunner, of higher quality than almost any psychedelic concert poster you'll find, printed on thick, high-quality, textured stock that's also glossy, with the brightly colored inks have almost a 3D effect to them. Most 60's advertising posters were printed on the cheap, but this was decidedly not. Fans of John Moehring are all nodding their heads; he was to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest as Gary Grimshaw was to Detroit. Within the clasped hands under Zappa, it says "John Moehring #34."
Condition details: Poster has a ¼" tear on the bottom edge under "Discount," which breaks color and shows white. The lower left corner has a 1" diagonal corner crease that breaks color in the blue & pink. The lower right corner has a ¼" diagonal corner crease that does not break the color. In the upper right corner, there's a 1" horizontal crease under the poster's edge, which barely breaks a little green & pink. Poster overall has a little bit of handling creasing, but just a little. Infinitely more obvious is the verso, where there are three lines of blacked-out lettering.
