GRATEFUL DEAD & HELLS ANGELS SHARING THE BIG APPLE

Grateful Dead, Hells Angels 1970 Anderson Theater, New York Concert Poster. An original, large, pre-show-printing concert poster for the Grateful Dead playing at the Anderson Theatre in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on Monday night, November 23, 1970. The Hells Angels motorcycle club "presented" the show because it was a benefit concert for their New York chapter.

The Anderson was located at 66 2nd Avenue in Greenwich Village. To help promote the show and sell tickets, these large posters with terrific Grateful Dead/motorcycle graphics - notice the whole poster is shaped like a tombstone - were printed and distributed around town. Imagine, it only cost a donation of $2.00 to see the Dead in the same month they released their classic album American Beauty, containing evergreens like "Box of Rain," "Friend of the Devil," "Sugar Magnolia" and, yes, "Truckin'." What a time to have seen them!

The poster has been knocked off prolifically over the years, but this is a completely genuine original done in the fall of '70. Its red and blue colors are terrifically deep and rich. And everything pops beautifully under a blacklight, including the skeleton on the chopper. Measures 23" x 35" and grades to Very Good condition. From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: In the lower right corner area, there is creasing which breaks the blue & black colors. There are also assorted little ‘worm creases' around the word "With" and on down to the bottom. The lower left corner has a mended corner tip (re-attached). On the verso, there is uneven toning and a few light black fingerprint smudges. And the upper right corner area has a ¼" edge tear in the white, barely noticeable.
