THE DEAD PLAYED THIS SHOW INSTEAD OF THE ACID TEST GRADUATION

Grateful Dead 1966 S.F. "Dance of Death" Halloween Costume Ball Concert Poster (AOR-2.143). An original paper concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Mimi Farina (Joan Baez' sister) playing Halloween night at San Francisco's California Hall on Monday, October 31, 1966. This was the first of 14 Halloween-night shows the Grateful Dead would eventually play.

What's notable is that the Dead were originally scheduled to play at the Acid Test Graduation at Winterland on this very night. However, promoter Bill Graham got wind of a rumor that the band was scheming to dose all attendees with LSD at that show, so he got it canceled. The whole thing collapsed, the Acid Test Graduation was moved to a small warehouse, and Jerry Garcia & Co. played this Costume Ball at California Hall instead.

Designed by Paul Hawken, this red & black poster 17" x 27" and grades to Very Good condition. From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.174 (illus.).

More Information: Poster has a ¼" edge tear at the bottom center which breaks color and shows white. The poster's right edge got a little creased & crumpled on the bottom few inches, showing some white. There's a tiny 1/8" edge tear directly over from the word "Tickets." There's general handling creases to the black background throughout. The good news is, there's very little to no instances of the poster's artwork being touched by any damage.
