THE DEAD, THE AIRPLANE AND BONNIE MACLEAN IN THE BEST GRADE POSSIBLE
BG-197 Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane 1969 Winterland Concert
Poster Graded 10 Gem Mint. First-printing San Francisco concert
poster for the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and the Sons of
Champlin playing at Winterland on Friday and Saturday nights,
October 24 & 25, 1969. Designed by Bonnie MacLean and known as
BG-197 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was graded a
mind-blowing 10 Gem Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty
Company). The Dead were playing with three albums under their belt, including their latest Aoxomoxoa, while the Airplane were one week away from releasing their Volunteers long-player. Eight (or is it seven?) musicians' faces are seen, including Jerry Garcia on guitar down in the lower left. The moon, an airplane, a butterfly and a haunted tree add to the effect. Measures 14" x 21". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: The Sons of Champlin were from Marin County just north of San Francisco, and featured front man Bill Champlin. Rather than a psychedelic band, they were more straight-ahead rock which featured horns and R&B influences. Early on they appeared on a few Marin County concert posters under their original name, The Opposite Six. Champlin would eventually turn solo in the late 70's and then join the huge rock group Chicago in 1981.
Bonnie MacLean, who gave herself the credit of "Bonnie MacLean Graham" in the margin because she was Bill's wife, created an interesting photo montage for this poster and embellished it with chalkboard-like lettering.
