Description
A CREAM-OF-THE-CROP POSTER IF EVER THERE WAS ONE
Cream (Eric Clapton) 1968 Vancouver, B.C., Canada Concert
Poster. A magnificent, seldom-seen original concert poster for
English supergroup Cream playing at the Pacific Coliseum in
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Sunday evening, June 2,
1968. This is a poster that just never comes up, and yet carries
one of the most popular non-psychedelic designs of any late-60's
hard rock concert poster out there. The depiction of Ginger Baker,
Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton inside a big dollop of cream coming out
of a milk bottle, in yellow and brown coloring, is just a home run
of design simplicity. This very thick board poster was manufactured by the Washington Poster Company of the pacific northwest, and their small credit runs along the side of the cream bottle. Since this was for a Canadian concert, you also have the obligatory "Printed in U.S.A." running along the bottom of the bottle in the poster's left margin.
Cream was not yet on their farewell tour of America; that would come in October-November. Meanwhile, being readied at pressing plants was the band's new double album, Wheels of Fire, which was released two weeks after this show. This first-ever Heritage offering measures 15" x 22 1/2" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This poster board has small, neat pin or staple holes, but they're all in the white, nothing in the yellow. There's one in the upper left corner, two in the upper right, two in the lower right and zero in the lower left. (Those two spots in the yellow above the band's name are not pinholes, they're blemishes.) The upper left corner has some light bug chews in the margin only (bugs usually stop at the ink), and in that area, a 1" crease in the yellow & brown extreme upper left corner of the artwork. The lower right corner margin has "68" written lightly in pencil. General toning throughout.
