Description
George Morland 18th Century oil on canvas. George Morland is considered one of the greatest masters of The English School of painting along with contemporaries like Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Morland's remarkable paintings of everyday life exemplify his experiences with the people and settings of his time and a particular passion for nature and animals. In fact, Morland made a specialty of painting horses. Morland possessed the talent to portray even the most mundane subjects with artistic grace and masterful composition. His work is also thought to have been influenced from the relaxed elegance of the style developed in England by Van Dyck. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1784 to 1804. In this Morland-attributed 24 x 20 (visible through mat) oil painting on stretched canvas, Morland depicts a country father coming home to his family and presenting a pheasant for their pot. The signature elements of nature, common folk and animals are all beautifully represented here in mellow yet vibrant tones of sunshine through trees illuminating his subjects. In a vintage and ornate 36 x 31.5 in. bone-white frame and fabric mat with gold border. In vintage very good condition. Special shipping arrangements will apply.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
