Description

Moe Howard's (70+) page handwritten manuscript for his Autobiography Moe Howard and the Three Stooges. (1977) Vintage original (70+) pages of notes, anecdotes, chapters and bullet points handwritten on 8 x 12.5 in. lined, yellow legal pad paper (many pages written on front and back), for Moe Howard's autobiography, Moe Howard of the Three Stooges, published in 1977 by Citadel Press. Moe Howard, the leader of the legendary slapstick comedy trio, spent his last days writing these pages. When Howard passed away from lung cancer in 1975, his daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, completed the book and saw it published. It was republished in 2013, retitled with Moe Howard's previous, tentative title: I Stooged to Conquer. Highlights from the pages include events from birth until the 1970s and feature Moe relating his birth when his father remarked that he looked like a "shriveled up monkey!" Childhood, "Kindergarten was not for me. I raised hell right from the start". Moe gives himself his iconic Bowl Haircut, "I proceeded to encircle my head with the scissors..." and his family's reaction, "Now he is really ugly". Moe recalls his start in show business including his first film, the 1909 short We Must Do Our Best and the way some "young folks resented my ability to perform in films". Moe writes about Shemp's worry about Moe getting into trouble, "I can see you breaking rocks on a chain gang". Moe discloses details about how Larry became one of The Three Stooges as well as revealing unpublished details of Larry's philandering, which "cost Larry another diamond ring". Moe recalls the vaudeville circuit, special fan (and Police) encounters and the Three Stooges after Curly, "Every time I smacked or poked Shemp, I was seeing Curly" and much more up to his retirement and beyond. The manuscript contains much edited text and unpublished information. Exhibiting age and handling. In vintage very good to fine condition. Provenance: From the estate of Moe Howard.
