The Ten Commandments (Paramount, 1956), Fortunino Matania Scene Concept Sketch. Vintage artwork by Fortunino Matania [Italian, 1881-1963] rendered in oil on canvas, in wood (with white fabric) frame measuring 32" x 26" [sight: 29" x 23"]. Richly detailed concept tableau, vividly dramatizing the pivotal scene of erotically-charged bacchanalian apostasy where the Israelites, in Moses (Charlton Heston)'s absence, worship the golden calf at the behest of Dathan (Edward G. Robinson). Matania, revered for his realistic historical paintings, was enlisted by DeMille to create authentic concept designs featuring Roman and Egyptian iconography. Had DeMille actually filmed all that's depicted and implied here, he would have faced serious issues with the Motion Picture Production Board concerning their censorship code, strongly in effect in 1956, unlike for many of DeMille's rather gratuitous silents and early talkies, which preceded enforcement of the code.
