The Crusades (Paramount, 1935), Travis Banton Pair of Katherine DeMille "Alice of France" Costume Sketches. Vintage pair of costume sketches by Travis Banton rendered in gouache and graphite on art paper including (1) "Alice of France Cathedral" sketch measuring 14.25" x 21.75" and (1) "Alice of France" rejected gown sketch measuring 14.25" x 22.5". These ethereal sketches by Banton offer a unique perspective into DeMille's production process. The "Cathedral" dress for Katherine DeMille's character was given an okay by her father. The director's approval initials can be seen twice on the artwork - just below the artist's annotations. Production notes with a breakdown of the cost of materials appear on verso. The "rejected gown" for the same character includes a note from DeMille himself reading: "Mr. Banton, I don't think there will be enough difference between this and the wedding dress and nightgown. CBDM." Both of these revealing artworks are showcased in the comprehensive book Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic. Artworks exhibit production wear and storage wear including toning, smudging, staining, and minor corner wear.
