Description
DeMille Collection of Anatomical and Character Reference Studies for Silent-Era Productions, Group of (20) Small Sketches by Harrison Fisher and Others. Group of (20) figure studies rendered in graphite on art paper measuring from 2.25" x 3" to 7.25" x 9.5". These exquisite, intriguing figure studies from DeMille's personal collection are presented on four pages of heavy card stock. Three pages feature studies fixed on front and back, while the fourth page contains artwork on one side. These small sketches encompass comedic figures, portraiture, abstract nudes, and anatomical details. An elegant 7.25" x 9.5" portrait of a female in repose, is signed by renowned Cosmopolitan artist Harrison Fisher. His muse Maurine Rasmussen, known as the "Harrison Fisher Girl", appeared in two of DeMille's early silent films from 1914, The Squaw Man and Brewster's Millions. Dating estimate for these small, charming works is based on that, plus the fact that a few other vignettes are identifiable as Conrad Veidt as "Cesare" in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and John Barrymore as "Mr. Hyde" in Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, both from 1920. Artwork exhibits toning, tearing, and creasing, and all are pasted to backing leaves.
