Description
Woody Herman "Playing the Blues" 1940 Bridgeport, CT Concert & Dance Handbill. An original vintage paper flyer for clarinetist, saxophonist and bandleader Woody Herman appearing at Pleasure Beach Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Sunday, May 26, 1940. Lovely two-sided handbill with the star's photo taking up the verso. At this point, Mr. Herman had charted only four records on Billboard magazine's charts, which would eventually total 53 for him. But of those four records, his most famous recording was among them... "At the Woodchopper's Ball," his first Top 10 hit. You can be sure they cut a rug to that tune on this occasion.
Measures 6 1/4" x 8 3/8" and grades to Very Good condition. A 5 ½" surface crease from the top edge down to "1940." General overall toning but extra strong along the upper left edge. Assorted handling and surface creases throughout, especially to the left and right of "Number 1 Was Glenn Miller." Some markings at the very bottom edge, and a creased left corner. COA from Heritage Auctions.
