Description
Masters of the Universe (Cannon, 1987), Billy Barty "Gwildor" Prosthetic Mask and Animatronic Ears. Original group of (2) character costume and effects components including (1) static foam rubber prosthetic mask measuring 17" x 11" x 10" expertly studio crafted and painted in browns, oranges, and reds, including netted, red-dyed yak hair, eyebrows, and beard displayed on a black Styrofoam mannequin bust, and (1) animatronic ear rig measuring "14" x 11" x 7" consisting of a fiberglass skull cap with 2- foam latex cable-driven puppet ears and control board. Steel cables run from the top of the cap to the attached wooden control board measuring 24" x 8" with 2- metal and wood joysticks measuring 14" x 4" used to actuate the ears. Designed by James Kagel under the supervision of makeup designer Michael Westmore, the otherworldly inventor, Gwildor (Billy Barty), took an entire team of effects artists to bring to life. For the character's expressive ears, nearly 20 feet of cabling attached to the control board was run down actor Billy Barty's back and actuated by Michael Westmore's son. This mechanical control method was chosen over radio-controlled ears due to the lack of space underneath Billy's heavy prosthetics. Mask displays general age and production wear. Animatronics no longer function with cables having been detached or frayed from the joysticks. Foam components across the mask and puppet ears have hardened with age and display cracking, chipping and discoloration. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
