Description

Little Richard 1966 Oakland, CA Boxing-Style Concert Poster. In late summer 1966, the Beatles and Bob Dylan had just quit touring. But one of their biggest inspirations, Little Richard, continued soldiering on. This cardboard window card advertises Richard playing "two big nights" at the Continental Club in Oakland, CA on Friday & Saturday, September 16 & 17. The songs listed are a combination of old and new, with the classics being the 1957 Top 10 hit "Jenny, Jenny" and its B-side, "Miss Ann"; the same year's "Lucille"; and the #2 R&B hit from 1956, "Slippin' and Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin')". Measures 15 1/4" x 23" and grades to Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Notice Tilghman Press' rare double split-fountain effect used in the printing of this poster; usually it's either the background or the lettering that transitions its coloring, but in this case it's both. The background segues down the poster from yellow to white to lime green, while the lettering morphs from red to dark blue to black. Interesting! And we believe it was a real nod to Richard, who was playing in the same city (Oakland, CA) where Tilghman was located.

Condition details: Board is unquestionably banged up, most obviously in the lower right corner which is hugely creased through "Joe Tex" and into the Defenders' photo. There is also material missing at the top, both in the upper left corner and above "King," thanks to a one-inch tear which goes into the "K." Upper right corner has multiple creases that go through the lettering ("At The," "Club") but somehow don't break the yellow or red coloring. Lower left corner also took its hits, with multiple creases including in "Coming." Board is "wavy" in the top half from once being moist or wet. Moderate dirt, staining and toning throughout.
