Description

Unreleased Monster Toy Line 2-Up Prototype Set with Packaging Mock-Up. This one-of-a-kind prototype lot from longtime toy industry veteran Dan Pottick showcases a fascinating glimpse into a toy line that never reached store shelves-but almost did. Originally developed for Toys "R" Us, this unproduced monster-themed action figure series was created with the intention of capturing the imaginations of young collectors with a love for classic creatures. The lot includes rare 2-up prototypes-oversized pre-production sculpts used for finalizing figure molds-of five legendary monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy, and a Werewolf. Each comes in both an unassembled, unpainted state and a painted prototype, except for the Werewolf, which has no completed painted version. Frankenstein's Monster is represented by two distinct painted figures, indicating an evolution in the character's sculpting phase.

There was intended to be a sixth creature, a Mantis-style insect monster that appears only as a placeholder image in a full-color mock-up of a proposed Toys "R" Us exclusive window box set. This prototype box is composed of a custom-printed wrap over a cardboard form, featuring window slots for each figure. Behind each slot is vivid, custom background art and a character illustration, each slot presenting a fully imagined space for the intended figures.
While the figures themselves never went into production, this lot represents the creativity and behind-the-scenes development that fuels the toy industry. Pottick, a former president of Sky Kids and a designer with a track record of innovative branded toys, envisioned this series as a modern take on monster figures with play value, bold sculpting, and retail shelf presence. Whether for prototype enthusiasts, monster collectors, or toy historians, this remarkable offering is a rare relic from a Toys "R" Us toy line that almost was.
