Description

Breakfast at Tiffany's (Paramount, 1961), Audrey Hepburn "Holly Golightly" Costume Sketch for Pink Party Gown by Edith Head. Vintage original Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) costume sketch accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 12.75" x 17" artist's sketchbook leaf retaining top perforations, by legendary costume designer Edith Head. This is a variant of the iconic pink gown and tiara worn by Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) while accompanied by her aristocratic escort José da Silva Pereira (José Luis de Vilallonga), and when she receives a telegram of her brother's death. The neckline and sleeves in the sketch differ from the finished dress, as shown by Edith Head's pencil revisions indicating a deeper neckline and the removal of the sleeves. She also created a 'cameo' detail on the sketch to illustrate the revised neckline and sleeveless design. An "X" over the sketch signifies that a new version was to be produced reflecting these stylistic changes. Signed by Head in lower left, with notations "Holly/ Sat[in] on top", "cut and edge", "no waistline seam" and other specific cutting and sewing instructions. Exhibiting age, production handling, and irregular left margin rough trim. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
