Description

To Catch a Thief (Paramount, 1955), Grace Kelly "Frances Stevens" Brocade Design Beach Ensemble Pair of Costume Sketches by Edith Head. Vintage original pair of To Catch a Thief (1955) costume sketches accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 12" x 18" and 14.25" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. Pair of sketches featuring Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly) in a brocade-decorated black and white beach ensemble wearing a wide-brim sun hat. The black sleeveless jersey dress has a belted white overskirt. Worn when she meets John Robie (Cary Grant) in the hotel's lobby. Written on the white artist's paper, fully colored variation, is "Grace Kelly in 'To Catch a Thief'" along with Head's signature. The other, rendered in black monochrome on a putty-colored page from a spiral-bound artist's pad, is also labeled 'Grace Kelly' in Head's hand. The final on-screen design omits the brocade pattern depicted in the sketches. Head was nominated for an Oscar for this film for Best Costume Design, Color. Sketches exhibit expected minor age and production handling. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
