Description
Jimi Hendrix Experience 1968 L.A. Shrine Auditorium Concert Poster (AOR-3.72). An original first-printing concert poster, designed by John Van Hamersveld, for the Jimi Hendrix Experience appearing at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Saturday night, February 10, 1968. Also on the bill were the Soft Machine, the Electric Flag and Blue Cheer, and Pinnacle Concerts was the promoter. This is a true icon of 1960's psychedelic concert posters, and many people's favorite Hendrix poster ever. Its image has lived on for decades through official reprints, bootleg copies, appearances in books, T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. The poster is a masterwork, for both its electric depiction of the guitarist and its sublime blue & orange layout.
This is a true first printing, with no fine print at the bottom and only the artist's name in the lower right. The background behind Jimi is the original white color, and not the silver found on repro's. This gem was printed on thick uncoated paper and measures 19 1/2" x 27 1/2". We sold another specimen of this poster last summer that Chameleon had also touched up and it went for $9,062. Grades to repaired Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.277 (illus.).
More Information: The night before in Anaheim, California, Hendrix's amplifiers blew up just four songs into his second set, causing Jimi to walk off the stage in disgust, ending the show. So for this next night's gig, the band was outfitted with new Sunn amplifiers.
According to the book Jimi Hendrix – Concert Files by Tony Brown (Omnibus Press 1999), on the day of this show, Jimi conducts a daytime soundcheck with his new equipment, joined by the Byrds' David Crosby and the Electric Flag's Buddy Miles and Harvey Brooks.
And then for the show itself that evening, among the tunes performed were "Are You Experienced?," "The Wind Cries Mary," "Up From the Skies," "Red House," "Purple Haze" and Jimi's usual cover of the Troggs' "Wild Thing." Besides Crosby, in the audience were the Monkees' Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork.
Condition details: Poster once had multiple creases, pinholes, discoloration and edge tears around the four blue margins. All have been expertly mended and eliminated by our outside world-class poster restoration expert, Chameleon. What remains are some benign surface creases down the middle of Jimi's hair and face, with no color broken and best seen held at an angle to the light. Also, poster is 95% flat but a little bit ‘wavy' throughout as a result of the resto treatment. Framing would completely eliminate that, of course.
