John Lennon - A Substantial Lock of His Hair Trimmed in Preparation for Filming of How I Won the War along with a Signed Call Sheet and Period Provenance, Directly from His Hairdresser (Germany, 1966). This comes to us from Klaus Baruck, the hairdresser who trimmed Lennon's famous hair in Hamburg, Germany, just before his starring role as Gripweed in Richard Lester's dark comedy about a fictional British army troop and their misadventures in World War II. The overall length of the lock is approximately 4" and likely contains hundreds of strands. Included is a one-page 8.5" x 11" mimeographed page titled "Petersham Films Limited/ Call Sheet No.13" which is dated September 6, 1966, and bears an interesting blue ink signature: "John Lennon/ oh yes". John Lennon started wearing the round glasses for this role; he continued wearing the same style for the rest of his life. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest lock of Lennon's hair ever sold at auction. It can be dated to a specific time and location and has been in the collection of the original owner for all these nearly 50 years. This haircut took place just a month after the release of the legendary Revolver album. A rare and important opportunity. Call sheet has original folds, very good. Also included are two vintage period newspaper articles regarding this landmark haircut (anything Beatle-related was major news back then). (1) Bild dated September 7, 1966. It features several photos under a headline reading: Der gestutzte Chef-Beatle (The trimmed chief Beatle). One of the photos shows Baruck's hand holding the lock of John's hair and is captioned: "Immediately picked up and tucked away: a clump of hair that had been John Lennon's, cut yesterday." (2) Bild am Sonntag (Sunday edition) dated September 11, 1966, with a bold headline: Schmerzß laß nach! (Pain go away) and a banner above: "These photos were secret. For the first time printed: So fell the Beatle's mane!" It shows several photos including two of Baruck cutting John's hair. Under one, showing Lennon with a pained look on his face, is the caption: "The historic moment: John Lennon is deprived of his hair. The first look in the mirror says it all." Incredible provenance.
