Description

Cleopatra (Paramount, 1934), Cecil B. DeMille's Personal Script with Bookplate. Cecil B. DeMille's personal vintage original book-bound studio script measuring approx. 8.5" x 14" x 0.75", with a brown textured leatherette cover and "Cleopatra" stamped in gold down the spine. The film received mixed reviews of Cecil B. DeMille's epic upon its release. Mordaunt Hall of The New York Times called Cleopatra "one of the director's most ambitious spectacles" and praised Henry Wilcoxon's performance as "excellent, especially in the more dramatic sequences." John Mosher of The New Yorker criticized it as "moderate" even as an extravaganza, and called the dialogue "the worst I have ever heard in the talkies." Variety agreed that the lines often drew unintended laughter but noted, "Photographically the picture is superb." Exhibiting age, production use and handling, with rubbing to the cover and flaking edges, some spinal separation and edge toning to pages. The poster image is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Provenance: Profiles in History Sale #96, Lot #425. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
