Personal book-bound script for How the West Was Won (M-G-M, 1962). Vintage original 167-page script (with 10-page retakes with M-G-M cover bound-in) dated March 23, 1961, with blue, gray, and pink revision pages dated to May 7, 1962. Screenplay by James R. Webb and John Gay. The present script was custom-bound for Mr. Peck's personal library in dark green leatherette with title and Mr. Peck's name stamped in gilt on the front board. Spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. With 15 gelatin silver glossy 7.25" x 9.25" production stills and portraits from the film tipped to pages bound-in. Boards show some light scuffs, scratches and indentations. Fine.Widely considered to be one of Hollywood's greatest epic western films, it featured a star-studded cast including Carroll Baker, Lee J. Cobb, Henry Fonda, Carolyn Jones, Karl Malden, Gregory Peck, George Peppard, Robert Preston, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart, Eli Wallach, John Wayne, and Richard Widmark. It featured five different chapters directed by Henry Hathaway, John Ford, and Gorge Marshall and was narrated by Spencer Tracy. It was both critically acclaimed and a massive commercial success, earned eight Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Story and Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Best Sound and Best Film Editing. All four of the film's cinematographers, William H. Daniels, Milton R. Krasner, Charles Lang, and Joseph LaShelle, had previously won Academy Awards. In 1997, the film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry at the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Please note that while not a studio presentation script, the present script was custom bound for Mr. Peck's personal library and features his name stamped in gilt on the front board.
