Description

Gregory Peck H. Huntsman & Co. (2) Piece Herringbone Suit and Knit Tie from His Personal Wardrobe. Vintage original (2) piece gray suit in a fine herringbone pattern including (1) a tailored jacket and (1) matching pair of pants, made by renowned London Savile Row tailor, H. Huntsman & Sons, from Gregory Peck's personal wardrobe, made for The Man In the Gray Flannel Suit. The jacket retains the H. Huntsman & Sons internal bias label handwritten "G. Peck - 1.1.54 - 1565/1-3".

Gregory Peck had a decades-long association with this London Savile Row tailor, and specifically their legendary, long-time cutter, Colin Hammick. Anthony Peck, the actor's son, has said that his father had little else in his wardrobe and reserved the greatest praise and respect for their craftsmanship. Mr. Peck had likely been introduced to Huntsman by his friend, director John Huston, who he had collaborated with on Moby Dick (1956), or perhaps even a few years earlier as the tailor had also supplied costumes for the film, The Million Pound Note (1954).

Accompanied by a vintage dark blue knit tie from the same period. This suit and the tie were exhibited together at the Los Angeles museum, LACMA, from April 10 to August 21, 2016 as part of the Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715-2015 exhibit, which celebrated the rich history of restraint and resplendence in men's fashion over several centuries.

The suit exhibits minor wear commensurate with age but remains in vintage Very Good to Fine condition. Accompanied by a vintage 8" x 10" duplicate color transparency on safety film of Mr. Peck in a publicity portrait for The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (20th Century Fox, 1956).
