Blade II (New Line, 2002), Wayne Barlowe - Reaper Original Concept Art. Wayne Barlowe's chilling concept sketch for Blade II captures the autopsy of a Reaper, revealing grotesque anatomical detail. This design helped define the visceral, unsettling tone of Guillermo del Toro's vampire-horror sequel. As Blade (Wesley Snipes) and his uneasy allies-the Bloodpack-capture and kill one of the new evolutionary stages of vampires-the Reapers-they open the creature's chest cavity to reveal the internal mechanics of how it digests blood. The design of the Reapers and their method of feeding also prefigure the Master and his vampire brood in Guillermo del Toro's TV series The Strain (Fox TV, 2014-2017), who consume blood through an additional mouth that extends from the neck-an invention born of del Toro's desire to "present a vampire unlike anything seen before."
