Vintage gelatin silver glossy 2.75" x 4.5" photograph of Marilyn Monroe [Norma Jeane Dougherty] with Jim Dougherty and friends on Avalon, Santa Catalina, California, ca. 1942-1943, with exposure 113 wet stamp on the verso. Monroe was newly married to Jim Dougherty, a merchant marine assigned to teach ocean safety during their one-year stay. In the background is the green pleasure pier. Provenance: Christie's LA, Collection of Marilyn Monroe Memorabilia Sold to Benefit Hollygrove Children's Home, 12 September 2001, Lot 85 (lots 67-95) donated to Hollygrove Children's Home, 815 North El Centro Avenue, Hollywood. These photographs, many unpublished, were given to Clara Grace Goddard, Marilyn's guardian from 1935, who fostered Marilyn's early modeling career, by Marilyn or her mother, Gladys Baker Eley. Known as The Los Angeles Orphans Home Society until 1957, Norma Jeane Baker lived there from September 13, 1935, until June 12, 1937.
