More Information: From the Collection of George W. George, producer of "The James Dean Story," directed by Robert Altman; Jennifer George, by descent from the above.

George W. George (February 8, 1920 - November 7, 2007) was an accomplished television writer, filmmaker, and producer. His writing credits include Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Rifleman. His producer credits include Robert Altman's The James Dean Story and Louis Malle's My Dinner with Andre, in addition to numerous Broadway credits, the most notable of which is the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis. His father was the cartoonist Rube Goldberg who had received anti-Semitic hate mail for his political cartoons during World War II. Goldberg insisted that his sons change their last names before going to college. When his older brother, Thomas, chose George as a surname, George followed and became George W. George.

About The James Dean Story, 1957.

George W. George and Robert Altman met in Los Angeles in the 1950's and forged a relationship that would last a lifetime. They conceived and made their first film together called The James Dean Story. They began shooting in California in September 1955, and two days later, the 24-year-old star was killed in a car crash. Rather than abandon the project, they reimagined the film and created it through photographs and testimonials from colleagues, friends, and family - forging a new genre, the celebrity biopic. This collection, from the producer's estate, is from the making of the film.
As stated in the introduction, "The presence of the leading character in the film you are about to view has been made possible by the use of existing motion picture material, tape recordings of his voice, and by means of a new technique: the dynamic exploration of the still photograph". The production design was by photographer and film director Lou Stoumen, who had invented a track for a camera to move back and forth and in and out of still photographs, what today we now call the "Ken Burns effect."
