Description

Blues Project (w/Al Kooper) 1966 Café Au Go-Go New York Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising window card for The Blues Project playing in their home turf at the Café Au Go-Go in the hip Greenwich Village section of New York City, for the full week leading up to Christmas Day in 1966. It also plugs folk duo Ian & Sylvia coming to the nightclub after Christmas and into the New Year.

The five-man band was in very friendly territory, as their debut album on Verve/Folkways was titled Live at the Café Au Go Go and had come out that March. By this point the group had released its second LP, Projections, just the month prior. It would be their highest-charting album.

Poster consists of robin's-egg blue, white and black, and is centered around a good-sized publicity photo of the Blues Project, with key member Al Kooper in the center wearing a somewhat psychedelic shirt.

Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. Serious horizontal crease in the cardboard at the midpoint, consisting of three or more tentacles which break the photo's black color in places. Another long, arching surface crease from the edge by "XMAS" down through the band's name, but not breaking any color. Likewise with another from the last "O" in "Go-Go" up into the musician's black shoe. Light grime here & there on the white background, and very light water staining in poster's lower right corner area. Two or more small pin holes in each corner plus the poster's top and bottom center edges. A strong knock to the upper right corner leaving a two-inch horizontal crease. "1966" written in light blue pen right after "Dec. 24," and more of the same writing on the verso. Obviously not a condition play here, but a rare poster that we've never seen before from a key mid-60's New York band. COA from Heritage Auctions.
