Boris Karloff Charlie Chan at the Opera and Night Key Photos. Two great Karloff makeups and performances: a wonderfully over-the-top Mephistopheles in Charlie Chan at the Opera and a kindly old genius in Night Key. With horror films imperiled by international censorship trouble in 1936, Karloff extended his professional horizons - playing mad opera singer "Gravelle" in 20th Century-Fox's Chan film, and kindly old inventor David Mallory in Universal's crime melodrama Night Key. The Charlie Chan at the Opera file contains two portraits of Karloff in full opera devil regalia, plus a negative of one of the portraits. The Night Key lot offers a great original portrait of Karloff in age makeup, with "KARLOFF Universal Pictures Star" stamped en verso and original snipe, plus a shot of Karloff with leading lady Wendy Barrie and a negative of a different portrait.
