A remarkable album of candid 2.5" x 3.5" b&w photographs -- 191 in all -- snapped by celebrity photographer Irv Steinberg on the streets of New York City in 1948. The archive is a time machine back to show business's booming post Word War II era, with shots of such leading men Clark Gable, Gene Autry, Henry Fonda, John Garfield, Marlon Brando, Rex Harrison, Danny Kaye, Turhan Bey, Jack Benny, Ray Bolger, Kirk Douglas and Jimmy Durante; leading ladies such as Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, Paulette Goddard, Lucille Ball, Linda Darnell, Ava Gardner, Joan Bennett, Jennifer Jones, Talllulah Bankhead, June Allyson, Ruby Keeler and Helen Hayes; character stars such as Boris Karloff, Judith Anderson, William Bendix, Lon Chaney Jr., Fay Bainter, Edmund Gwenn, John Carradine, Lee J. Cobb, Edward Arnold and Dean Jagger; musical attractions such as Perry Como, Lena Horne, Tommy Dorsey, Phil Harris and the Andrews Sisters; even military hero General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Shots have notes on the reverse as to when and where Steinberg shot them and are housed in an attractive maroon 10" x 15" leather album. Intriguing to see the stars who actually looked better in person than on the screen (the opposite holds true as well); certainly an ultra-rare opportunity to get a glimpse of these celebrities in the "real world" and away from the cosmetic atmosphere of Hollywood. A wonderful collection in Excellent condition.
