According to the plaque beneath the gold disc, this award was "Presented to John Phillips to Commemorate the Sale of More Than One Million Copies of the Dunhill Records Pop Single Record 'Monday Monday'". Awards presented to the recording artists themselves are seldom offered and are very desirable. In this case, John Phillips was also the sole composer of the song.
