Description
A Mary Gordon Personally-Owned Autograph Book from The Hollywood Canteen, 1944. Compiled by the Scottish character actress best remembered for her role as "Mrs. Martha Hudson" in the "Sherlock Holmes" films starring Basil Rathbone; medium-sized tan-colored leather-bound volume filled with pages of inscriptions to Gordon from fellow actors who volunteered their time at the famous Hollywood Canteen (the nightclub founded by Bette Davis and John Garfield to help the morale of U.S. soldiers fighting in WWII); signed in either black or blue fountain pen ink, Gordon obtained the signatures of those including (in alphabetical order): Brian Aherne, Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Benny, Edgar Bergen, Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Joe E. Brown, Billie Burke, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Linda Darnell, Harry Davenport, Marion Davies, Bette Davis, Mary Ford, John Garfield, Peggy Ann Garner, Greer Garson, Paulette Goddard, June Havoc, Sonja Henie, Katharine Hepburn, Bob Hope, Marsha Hunt, Kay Kyser, Hedy Lamarr, Ray Milland, Frank Morgan, Maureen O'Hara, Merle Oberon, Buddy Rogers, George Sanders, Ann Sheridan, C. Aubrey Smith, Robert ("Bob") Walker, Orson Welles, Jane Withers, Keenan Wynn, and Robert Young, among a few others; interestingly, both Davis and Garfield mentioned "the Canteen" in their inscriptions to Gordon; also included is Mary Gordon's Hollywood Canteen ID card plus a black and white photograph shot by Joseph Jasgur showing Sgt. Carl E.W. Bell signing this book as he was the "Millionth Man" visiting the Canteen; overall, a great item related to the Greatest Generation.Autograph Book: 10" x 8 1/2" x 2"
