Description
Ruth Brown, Dinah Washington 1956 Apollo Theater, Harlem Concert Handbill. An original vintage advertising flyer for a bevy of R&B acts playing over a six-week period in 1956-57 at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, Manhattan, New York. It's tough to single out stars on a piece that is so full of them. Spread over the four pages of this handbill which could be folded down to a small pamphlet are Ruth Brown, Dinah Washington, the Orioles, the Clovers, Count Basie with Joe Williams, the 5 Keys, comedian George Kirby and Pearl Bailey are among the brightest.
The Apollo's marketing crew was very savvy and generous in almost always including a photograph of the people appearing on their fliers like this, even the smallest acts, a real treat for collectors today, half a century later.
Measures 11" x 8 ½" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. Very light handling and creasing, a natural factory fold right down the middle (not damage), a little extra creasing right by Pearl Bailey's picture (including in the corner but that's not a tear), and general overall toning. COA from Heritage Auctions.
