Description

Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash 1965 Carnegie Hall, NY Concert Program. An original Carnegie Hall concert program for The New York Folk Festival taking place over four days and evenings in June 1965. Sid Bernstein was involved in the production, which commenced on Thursday evening, June 17 and concluded with a Sunday night show on June 20. Participants included Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash - none of whom is very associated with folk music, but labels and boundaries were really stretched in the 60's, with lots of blues, rock and country mixed in.

Also appearing over the four days were Mose Allison, Son House, Dave Van Ronk, Eric Von Schmidt, Eric Andersen, June Carter, Mississippi John Hurt, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jesse Colin Young, Skip James, the New Lost City Ramblers, Doc Watson, the Holy Modal Rounders, Bill Monroe, Phil Ochs and the Staple Singers, plus more. Obviously, everybody jumped at the chance to play at Carnegie Hall.

A full-page ad from Columbia Records is also present, showing six LP covers including Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home. But Dylan was not part of the program. Measures 8 ¼" x 11 ¼" and grades to Very Good condition. There is some long-dried-out moisture exposure evident, and some typical light creasing to the paper. Also, the center spread which has the details of this show only has come loose from one staple but is still held in place by the other staple. From the Archives of Charlie Rothschild. COA from Heritage Auctions.

As a manager, touring manager and concert promoter himself, Charlie worked alongside folk and rock 'n' roll greats Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Gordon Lightfoot, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, Allen Ginsberg, Ian & Sylvia, The Clancy Brothers, Odetta, The Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, among others. Charlie also ran the storied 1960's New York City music venue Balloon Farm, before going out on his own in 1972.
