Description

Simon & Garfunkel and More 1972 Benefit for George McGovern New York City Concert Poster (3). This is a lot of three of the same concert poster, called "Together for McGovern at the Garden." This was a fundraiser for the Democratic hopeful in his attempt to knock Richard Nixon out of office. (It didn't succeed, of course.) The show took place on Wednesday, June 14, 1972 at the legendary Madison Square Garden venue.

The four big headliners were, in alphabetical order, comedians Mike Nichols & Elaine May; Peter, Paul & Mary; Simon & Garfunkel; and Dionne Warwicke. We're sure that Simon & Garfunkel closed the show.

The ushers in the expensive seats were big names, too. We won't write them all out here, but notice they included Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, Paul Newman, James Earl Jones, Jon Voight, Raquel Welch and many more.

Measures 10 3/4" x 27" and grades to Very Good condition for light handling to the posters' glossy surfaces, very light horizontal 'accordion creases' from being once rolled in storage, and light toning throughout. From the Archives of Charlie Rothschild. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Charlie Rothschild is a music manager with a career that spanned decades. In his early career, Charlie booked musical acts at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village, most notably Bob Dylan in September 1961, Dylan's first paid gig in New York City. He went on to work for renowned manager Albert Grossman (Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Janis Joplin). As a manager, touring manager and concert promoter himself, Charlie worked alongside folk and rock 'n' roll greats Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Gordon Lightfoot, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, Allen Ginsberg, Ian & Sylvia, The Clancy Brothers, Odetta, The Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, among others. Charlie also ran the storied 1960's New York City music venue Balloon Farm, before going out on his own in 1972.
