Description
Hammett (Zoetrope, 1982), Group of (3) Scripts Including Continuity Script, Shooting Script, and Custom-Bound Leather Script, with Studio Memos. Original group of (3) scripts from the Zoetrope production Hammett (1982), a stylized noir mystery imagining the fictional exploits of legendary detective novelist Dashiell Hammett, including (1) custom-bound red leather rainbow script, 127-pages (as paginated), gold-embossed with the title Hammett on the front and spine. This version, numbered 138, features multicolored revision pages throughout and includes studio publicity photos of the cast, Wenders, Roos, and Coppola adhered to interior pages. Dated July 1980, the script also contains production stills and press clippings pasted into the back section. Also present is (1) studio-bound and bradded second draft shooting script, 104-pages (as paginated), with a distinctive blood-red cover displaying the Hammett title in stylized font. The spine is marked in blue ink with the handwritten note "Hammett - J. Gores." Also includes (1) Zoetrope continuity version with a yellow cover, stamped number "5" on the title page, composed of 8.5" x 11" pages bradded at the top. Accompanying the scripts are two original Zoetrope Studio memos-one addressed to Fred Roos and another from Roos-as well as an additional memo from Jill Kearney dated December 7, 1981, on official Zoetrope letterhead. Roos has handwritten a response directly onto the memo and stapled it to the original. This exchange later appears in a formal draft concerning the WGA credit determination for the film. The film starred Frederic Forrest and was directed by acclaimed European filmmaker Wim Wenders, with Fred Roos and Francis Ford Coppola serving as producers. These materials offer a revealing look into the creative development, production logistics, and internal negotiations surrounding the making of Hammett. Items exhibit handling wear, age, and fading. The poster is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
