Description

Eve Babitz Collection of Written Materials including Unproduced Manuscript, Essay Drafts, and Correspondence (ca. 1970s). Vintage original collection of materials relating to the writer and cultural critic, Eve Babitz, who dated and maintained a creative relationship with Fred Roos around 1973-1975, including several previously unpublished and unseen drafts for a manuscript, various essay drafts, and several letters of correspondence. Consists of (3) drafts for a manuscript entitled, "The Movie Monk", with (2) 65-page (as paginated) versions, 1- bradded in vinyl maroon wraps and 1- bradded in salmon pink wraps, and (1) shorter 31-page (as paginated) draft bradded in Zoetrope Studios stamped maroon vinyl wraps. Each with a photostat note for Fred from Eve, with 1-reading "Fred darling - This is a first draft but [since] the part about you starts on pg 14 / Love, Eve Babitz". Also contains (1) 2-page photostat letter on pulp paper containing Babitz's handwritten annotations, dated November 16, 1975, and signed by Babitz on the second page. Also included are several dozen pages related to drafts and sections of essays Babitz was writing, presumably in preparation for her 1975 essay, "All This and the Godfather Too", originally published in Coast Magazine. Several contain handwritten numerical notations to top corners with 1-marked "Eve's File", indicating how these papers were stored by Roos. Additionally includes (1) 2-page typewritten letter to Fred and Eve from Eileen Peterson, Roos' publicist at the time, dated October 14, 1974, and offering edits and thoughts on a draft of Babitz's essay about Coppola and The Godfather Pt. II. This letter is signed by Eileen on the second page and contains similar later file marking "E. Babitz" to front page. Finally, several photostat copies of prior published essays by Babitz are included as well, including 1-GQ article entitled "Ports Serve L.A.'s Sitting Rooms" and 1-from Rolling Stone entitled "The Sheiks". All materials exhibiting signs of personal use and handling, including foxing, brittle pulp pages, bumped corners, and other expected signs of wear and age. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
