Description

Hanover Street (Columbia, 1979), Original Movie Poster Final Key Art by John Alvin. One of the most accomplished and sought after poster designers of the 20th century, John Alvin had the keen ability to create works of artistic mastery as he approached creating his poster art. Although less of a household name than some of his more well-known designs, the final key art offered here for 1979's romantic war film Hanover Street is no different. Showing Lt. David Halloran (Harrison Ford) staring longingly into the eyes of Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down) with her face in the palm of his hand and a large B-25 Bomber streaking through the foreground as if flying off the canvas, Alvin again employs the masterful techniques that make his poster designs both timeless and deeply emotional. Taking inspiration from the pulp art designs that covered the crime and romance dustjackets of the 1940s and '50s, this large, 41.25" x 41.25", oil on canvas painting contains a central painted area over a navy-blue background with an olive drab perimeter separated by bisecting lines of crème and red. The B-25 Bomber takes up the central part of the canvas, painted with a glowing orange underbelly and in precise detail showing the text "Gorgeous George-Ann" below the cockpit, with several bombs falling through the clouds on an outline of Europe below. Canvas is framed with a linen mat and composite frame measuring 47.25" x 47.25" overall. The canvas exhibits some signs of damp staining and wear on the lower righthand quadrant and some scuffs on the lefthand corner. The poster image is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
