Description

Marilyn Monroe, for Look Magazine, November 1961, Original 35mm Color Transparencies (16) by Douglas Kirkland. Vintage original 35mm color transparencies (sixteen) on Kodachrome film in original mount of Marilyn Monroe for Look magazine, November 1961, by Douglas Kirkland, with EASYMOUNT ®35 MM-DF and PEGCO / N. HOLLYWOOD / Calif. U.S.A. and MADE IN U.S.A. printed on the mount. With highlighted emulsion, indicating that these are likely 1st-generation images derived from the camera transparencies. The transparencies capture Monroe during the most intimate and mythic photographic session of her career-posed beneath silk sheets, lit by a single soft lamp, in a Los Angeles hotel room at age 35. These are not rehearsed studio portraits, but images of a star inviting the camera closer, rendering herself both luminous and vulnerable. Photographed by 27-year-old Douglas Kirkland over the course of one night in November 1961, this session-commissioned by Look magazine-produced some of the most enduring images of Monroe ever taken. Arranged with minimal lighting, no entourage, and only Monroe, Kirkland, and a bottle of Dom Pérignon in the room, the shoot represented a turning point in celebrity portraiture: personal, cinematic, and confessional. Very Fine/Excellent. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
