Description
Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe Ketubah for Their July 1, 1956 Wedding Ceremony. Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe's ketubah, traditionally a special Jewish prenuptial agreement, outlines the rights and responsibilities of the groom in relation to the bride. This beautiful, richly colored document is printed on two oblong 9" x 6.5" leaves and reads, "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine. No man without woman; no woman without man; and neither without God." This testimonial witnesses that Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe were united in marriage in the city of Lewisboro, Westchester on July 1, 1956, 22nd of Tammuz 5716, in accordance with the rite of Israel and in compliance with the laws of the State of New York. Signed by Rabbi Robert E. Goldburg and witnessed by Arthur's brother, Kermit Miller, as well as Marilyn's acting coach, Lee Strasberg. Affixed to the original double-pane mat with tape on the verso, the overall dimensions are 14" x 21". Monroe and Miller were married in a civil ceremony on June 29, 1956, and again in a Jewish ceremony on July 1. Their nuptials were celebrated at the home of Miller's literary agent, Kay Brown, with some 30 friends and family in attendance. Nominally raised a Christian, Monroe converted to Judaism before marrying Miller. Miller, reflecting on his courtship with Marilyn, wrote, "She was a whirling light to me then, all paradox and enticing mystery, street-tough one moment, then lifted by a lyrical and poetic sensitivity that few retain past early adolescence." Exhibits some wear and age, including overall toning. Retains the backing from the original frame with partially obstructed Christie's label and E. 45th St., New York framing shop label. Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, December 20, 1990, Lot 221A.
